Your trip starts early morning from fes drive south in the middle atlas mountains. The first port of call is the charming Ifrane (“the Switzerland of Morocco”) revered for its alpine looking houses and clean streets. Proceed to Azrou to see the famed cedar forest and playful Barbary apes.
The road takes you over the Middle Atlas Mountains and through Midelt, a small mountain town famous for its apple orchards. Here, you can pause for lunch and enjoy vistas of surrounding peaks. As you drive south, you descend to the Ziz Valley, one of Morocco’s biggest oasis areas, where dates grow under thousands of palms and traditional kasbahs dot the riverbanks.
Then continue through Erfoud, known for fossils and dates, before arriving in Merzouga, the base for the Erg Chebbi dunes. For sunset, near the end of the afternoon, you will ride camels instead to take you through the golden Sahara. Arrive at your luxury desert camp just in time for a traditional dinner, live Berber music, and restful night under the stars.
Wake up early to watch the sunrise over the dunes and breakfast at the camp. Then, embrace an adventure with a 4×4 in the area of Merzouga. Meet the beguiling rhythm of Gnawa music in the village of Khamlia, visit nomadic families in the desert, and explore the seasonal salt lake Dayet Srji. In the afternoon, check in to a quaint hotel or riad located by the dunes where you can relax, swim or take a tranquil stroll. Diner and overnight in lovely Hotel.
After breakfast, start leave the golden dunes of Merzoug and head back to the north. Your first destination is Rissani, a historic town often called the former capital of the Tafilalet region or the birthplace of Morocco’s ruling dynasty. Wander in its lively market and discover its history as a trading powerhouse. Later Pass through Erfoud, known for its fossil workshops, and then roll out along the stunning Ziz Valley once more, its layered rock structures and palm groves rendering the landscape a true living desert.
Pause for photo ops and lunch along the way. We will reach Midelt in afternoon, a quiet Berber town at the foothills of the Middle Atlas and High Atlas Mountains, check into a guesthouse or hotel for dinner and overnight.
Finish with breakfast before starting the return leg journey to the Middle Atlas. You will once again stop in Azrou, where you can stretch your legs or buy more local crafts. You may also find the friendly monkeys entertaining and end up feeding them with nuts purchased from vendors outside the reserve. Pass through Ifrane again, and you may decide to take a brief coffee or photo stopover before proceeding to Fes. Drop off is at your accommodation late in the afternoon, having seen various Moroocan landscapes as well as attending practical experiences with the warm Sahara village.
