You’ll start your journey with an early pick-up from the lively city of Marrakech to travel over the magnificent High Atlas Mountains to the Tizi n’Tichka Pass (at 2,260 meters). Winding roads take you past Berber villages and peaks blanketed in snow. After a scenic 3- to 4-hour drive stops at Ait Ben Haddou — a large, well-preserved ksar (a fortified village) and UNESCO World Heritage site and setting of many Hollywood blockbusters such as Gladiator and Game of Thrones. Thereafter, lunch, keep driving to Ouarzazate, it is called the “Hollywood of Africa”. Next cross the Valley of Roses we will finish the day in the tranquility of the Dades Valley. You will stay the night in a delightful guesthouse which is set between the red canyons and the palm groves of the area.
After breakfast, drive east to the showstopper Todgha Gorges, where 300-meter high sheer rose-colored rock walls with a crystal-clear river running through it punctuate the narrow little canyon. It’s a nice spot for a quick walk and some nice photos. Our journey there passes through Berber towns and desolate areas until reaching Merzouga, the popular jumping-off point for exploring the Sahara. Ride your camel across the golden Erg Chebbi dunes, just as the sun starts to set. After that, you can spend the night star gazing at a traditional desert camp where you will have a warm dinner, live Berber music and sleep under a blanket of stars – this is truly a magical experience.
After a peaceful desert sunrise, have a good breakfast before a day of exploration around the area of Merzouga. Go for a 4×4 drive in the nearby dunes, meet nomadic families in their tents, and see the very strong and interesting life style in the Sahara. Visit the village of Khamlia, home to the lively Gnawa music scene and a culture hailing from deep in Africa, where you’ll watch a performance and be treated to local hospitality. If the weather and the seasonal Salt Lake (Dayet Srji) is in season, we can visit little desert oases, ancient mines, lunch in a local restaurant specialized in Berber Pizza. Once your desert exploration comes to and end, we transfer you to a Lovely Hotel for overnight stay.
Today we head back to Fes after breakfast. Bounce through the sprawling Ziz Valley, with thousands of finger-like date palms, and appreciate the increasingly dramatic landscape as you climb into the Middle Atlas Mountains. Break for lunch in Midelt, and then journey on through cedar forests around Azrou, where you are likely to spot some wild Barbary macaque monkeys. Take an optional stop in Ifrane known as the “Switzerland of Morocco” thanks to its alpine architecture. Your memorable desert adventure comes to an end in Fes, filled with countless memories and beautiful pictures of the most beautiful views over Morocco!
