After breakfast, you will be taken on a 4 hours guided tour of Marrakech with a local guide. Escape Marrakech as you travel into the High Atlas Mountains, passing the spectacular Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260m), with stops for photos and panoramic vantage points. See the UNESCO-listed kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, famous for numerous movie sets. Visit this ancient fortress village and then head on to Ouarzazate for a brief stop before following the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs to the stunning Dades Valley, home to some of the most spectacular rock formations and villages in the area. Stay overnight at a hotel or guesthouse overlooking the valley.
Following breakfast, continue toward the stunning Todgha Gorges, with gigantic rock walls going up to 300m high. You’ll have time to walk in the gorge and take photos before continuing onward through desert towns like Erfoud and Rissani, gateways to the Sahara. Upon arrival the golden dunes ride your camles into the dunes of Erg Chebbi as the sun is setting. Arrive at your luxury desert camp for a traditional dinner, live Berber music and a fabulous night in an incredible desert setting.
Get up early to see the sunrise over the golden dunes, once you have your breakfast, we leave for Fes passing through the Ziz Valley, a fertile ribbon of palm groves and ancient kasbahs. Following the lunch at Midelt, journey through the cedar forests of Azrou, to see barbary apes in the wild, located just on the sides of the road, as well as passing through Ifrane, a beautiful mountains village, referred to as “the Switzerland of Morocco”. Arrive in Fes in the evening, check in to a lovely riad locating at the ancient medina.
Today we will visit Fes, Morocco’s oldest and most spiritual imperial city. With a local licensed guide, visit the Al Quaraouiyine University, the oldest university in the world, the Bou Inania Madrasa, the Nejjarine Museum, Chouara Tanneries, and the busy craft quarter. Stroll the cramped lanes of the Fes el-Bali medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site where life has not changed for centuries. Step outside in the afternoon to check out the gates of the Royal Palace and the Jewish Quarter (Mellah), all a short walk from your riad.
Following breakfast, we depart Fes and travel to Meknes, once the capital of Morocco, which is known for its large gates and stables and the monumental Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail. Next, we continue to Volubilis, where preserved mosaics and columns are more than 2,000 years old at an archaeological site. After lunch, turn north on the road that corkscrews up into the Rif Mountains, finally reaching Chefchaouen, Morocco’s “Blue Pearl.” Wander around its serene, blue-washed medina where every turn is picture perfect. Overnight at a comfortable riad perched on the hillsides.
For today, we take a leisurely breakfast and enjoy the last sights of Chefchaouen before we head to the nearby Tangier. En route, stop in Tetouan, a town that owes much of its character to Andalusian culture. Depending on the times of your flights, take a short tour to the best of Tangier, including Kasbah, Cape Spartel, or the Caves of Hercules, before being taken to Tangier Airport or your hotel.
