Following breakfast, continue toward the stunning Todgha Gorges, with gigantic rock walls going up to 300m high. Today we will visit Fes, Morocco’s oldest and most spiritual imperial city. With a local licensed guide, visit the Al Quaraouiyine University, the oldest university in the world, the Bou Inania Madrasa, the Nejjarine Museum, Chouara Tanneries, and the busy craft quarter. Stroll the cramped lanes of the Fes el-Bali medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site where life has not changed for centuries. Step outside in the afternoon to check out the gates of the Royal Palace and the Jewish Quarter (Mellah), all a short walk from your riad.
Following breakfast, we depart Fes and travel to Meknes, once the capital of Morocco, which is known for its large gates and stables and the monumental Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail. Next, we continue to Volubilis, where preserved mosaics and columns are more than 2,000 years old at an archaeological site. After lunch, turn north on the road that corkscrews up into the Rif Mountains, finally reaching Chefchaouen, Morocco’s “Blue Pearl.” Wander around its serene, blue-washed medina where every turn is picture perfect. Overnight at a comfortable riad perched on the hillsides.
For today, we take a leisurely breakfast and enjoy the last sights of Chefchaouen before we head to the nearby Tangier. En route, stop in Tetouan, a town that owes much of its character to Andalusian culture. Depending on the times of your flights, take a short tour to the best of Tangier, including Kasbah, Cape Spartel, or the Caves of Hercules, before being taken to Tangier Airport or your hotel.
